What custom decking involves

Deck replacement is one of those projects homeowners put off until the boards are actually soft underfoot. Don't wait that long. A full deck replacement from H&H Creations comes with a craftsmanship warranty and manufacturer warranty on materials, so what you're getting isn't just new boards. It's a structure that's built to the load specs your property needs and covered if something goes wrong. We're bonded and insured, which matters when someone's working on the part of your home where your family spends the most time. Call (509) 514-7171 and we'll get eyes on it.

The cost of a deck project depends on size, height off grade, material choice, railing style, and whether the existing framing can stay or needs to come out. Composite decking runs higher upfront but skips the annual sealing and resists the freeze-thaw cycles that split wood boards after a few winters. Pressure-treated wood costs less to start and still performs well when it's framed and finished correctly. A basic deck repair might land under $1,000; a full replacement with composite decking and cable railing on a large elevated deck can reach $20,000 or more. Every job is different, contact H&H Creations for an accurate estimate.

What We Build

Decking Services We Handle

One crew from framing to finish: no subs, no handoffs.

01

New Deck Construction

Ground-up deck builds on new homes or properties that have never had outdoor structure. We handle permits, layout, framing, decking, and railing from scratch.

02

Deck Replacement

Old deck coming off, new one going on. We demo the existing structure, assess the framing, replace what's compromised, and build back with the material you choose.

03

Deck Repair

Soft spots, broken boards, rotted posts, loose railing. If the bones are sound, repair is often the right call and we'll tell you honestly if it is.

04

Composite Decking

Trex, TimberTech, and similar composite products that hold up through wet winters without warping, splitting, or needing annual treatment. Low maintenance, long lifespan.

05

Wood Decking

Pressure-treated lumber, cedar, and redwood options for homeowners who prefer the look and feel of real wood and are comfortable with periodic maintenance.

06

Railing Systems

Wood, metal, and cable railing systems built to code. Cable railing in particular opens up sight lines on elevated decks, a real difference on properties with any kind of view.

Wood vs. Composite: The Honest Comparison

A custom red-stained wooden deck with stairs and railings in a residential exterior setting.
Most of what you read online about composite vs. wood comes from manufacturers selling composite. Here's the actual breakdown. Composite decking costs more upfront, sometimes significantly more, but it doesn't split, it doesn't need sealing, and it holds its color for years without much effort on your part. In a climate with real winters, that's worth something. Freeze-thaw cycles are hard on untreated wood: the moisture gets in, it freezes, it expands, and by spring you've got cracked boards and lifted fasteners. Pressure-treated wood is not a bad option. It's been the standard for decades because it works. A properly built PT deck, maintained every couple of years, will last a long time. The honest caveat is that people often don't maintain it, and a neglected wood deck deteriorates faster than a neglected composite one. If you know you won't be out there with a sprayer every other spring, composite is the safer choice for the long haul. We carry and install both. We don't push one over the other, we tell you what fits your budget, your maintenance habits, and your property. Projects in Spokane Valley and Cheney with significant seasonal exposure tend to see better long-term results from composite, but the right answer depends on your specific situation.

Our Process

How a Deck Build Actually Works

  1. 01

    Site Assessment and Design

We look at your yard, your home's structure, local setback requirements, and what you actually want to use the space for. That shapes the layout, height, and material recommendation before any numbers get attached.

  2. 02

    Framing and Foundation

Posts, beams, and joists set to carry the load the structure needs. This is where the job gets done right or doesn't. The decking on top only looks good if what's underneath is square and solid.

  3. 03

    Decking, Railing, and Finish

Boards go down, railing goes in, and we clean up completely before we're done. You get both a manufacturer warranty on materials and our craftsmanship warranty on the build itself.

The H&H Standard

What Separates a Deck That Lasts Five Years from One That Lasts Twenty

  1. 01

    Footings set below frost depth

Footings that don't go deep enough heave in a real winter. We set them to depth for the specific soil and climate conditions of the site.

  2. 02

Joist spacing to match your material

Composite decking has different span requirements than wood. Frame it for wood, put composite on top, and you'll feel the flex underfoot within a season.

  3. 03

    Fasteners rated for the material

Stainless or coated fasteners for composite, hot-dipped galvanized for treated lumber. Wrong hardware corrodes, stains the decking, and backs out of the board over time.

  4. 04

    Flashing at the ledger board

Where the deck attaches to your house is where water damage starts if it's not flashed correctly. We do it right because the alternative is rot inside your rim joist that you won't see until it's structural.

A Deck Adds Real Outdoor Space: and Real Value

  1. 01

    Short Summers Matter

The outdoor season in the Inland Northwest is real but it's not long. A well-built deck, screened, covered, or open, is how you actually use those months instead of just watching them from a window.

  2. 02

One Contractor for the Whole Project

H&H Creations handles fencing and exterior remodeling alongside decking. If your project involves more than just the deck, you're not coordinating between three different subs.

  3. 03

    Financing Available

Decking projects range widely in scope and cost. Financing options are available. Ask about them when you call so we can factor it into what we build toward.

Deck Projects Across the Region

We build and replace decks throughout the area, including neighborhoods and communities across the region.

Decking Questions We Hear Often

What does decking mean?
Decking refers to the surface boards of an outdoor deck structure, the planks you walk on, as well as the broader project of designing, framing, and finishing an outdoor platform attached to or set adjacent to a home. The term covers material type (composite, wood, PVC), the installation process, and in some contexts the entire deck system including framing and railing.
How much would a 20x20 deck cost?
A 20x20 deck is 400 square feet, which is a mid-size residential build. Pressure-treated wood at that size typically runs $8,000 to $15,000 installed depending on height, railing complexity, and site conditions. Composite decking at the same size lands higher, often $14,000 to $25,000 or more for premium materials and railing systems. Every job is different, contact H&H Creations for an accurate estimate.
Is it cheaper to do decking or patio?
A ground-level concrete or paver patio is usually less expensive than a framed deck at the same size, because there's no structural framing, no ledger attachment, and no railing required by code. However, an elevated deck on a sloped yard can't be replaced by a patio at grade. If your yard is flat and the deck is close to ground level, a patio is worth comparing. If you need elevation or attachment to the house, a deck is the right structure, and the costs reflect that.
What is decking in medical terms?
In medicine, 'decking' refers to a physical assault, specifically striking someone, causing them to fall. It has no connection to construction. If you landed on this page looking for that definition, the building industry borrowed the word from an entirely different context. Deck boards are named for their resemblance to ship decking, which predates the slang use by centuries.
How long does a composite deck last compared to a wood deck?
Quality composite decking from manufacturers like Trex or TimberTech carries 25-year to lifetime warranties on the boards themselves. Pressure-treated wood decks, when maintained, typically last 15 to 25 years before the decking surface needs significant attention, though framing can last longer if it stays dry. The gap closes when wood is maintained well and widens when it isn't. Composite's advantage in freeze-thaw climates is that it doesn't absorb moisture, so it doesn't cycle through expansion and contraction the way wood does.
Do I need a permit to build or replace a deck?
Most jurisdictions require a permit for any deck that's attached to the home or elevated more than 30 inches above grade. Replacement projects that match the existing footprint and structure sometimes fall under repair exemptions, but that varies by county and municipality. H&H Creations handles the permit research and application process as part of the project. You don't need to figure out the local rules yourself.
What are the signs that a deck needs full replacement rather than repair?
Soft or spongy decking boards that flex when you step on them, posts that move when you push them, a ledger board with visible rot or separation from the house, and joists that show significant decay below the surface. If the framing is compromised, patching the surface boards is a short-term fix that misses the real problem. We'll tell you honestly which category your deck is in after we look at it.
